MIM technology development history

MIM(metal injection molding) technology was started with ceramic spark plug of powder injection molding equipment which could be traced in the 1920 of the 20^th.century, then in the following decades powder injection molding was mainly concentrated on ceramic injection molding.Until 1979,Mr.Wiech organized a group of people to establish Parmatech metal injection molding and won two awards.Soon,Wiech and Rivers had successively earned patents.From that time,powder injection molding was beginning to change to metal injection molding.After Parmatech transferred several of their patents,MIM companies were increasingly setting up.In 1980,Wiech established Witec company;in 1982,Brunswick company moved into MIM industry,purchased Witec.After that,they registered Omark industry,Remington military products,Rocky dentistry companies and so on.In 1986,Nippon Seison company brought Wiech technology in.In 1990,Israeli company Metalor2000 also brought Wiech technology in,established MIM production line.After approx 20 years development,the whole value of MIM products are worth approx 1 billion USD in 2003.Dividing according to region,America covers 55%,then Europe and Japan.

Now there are more than 500 companies working on MIM production and sales in the world.And there are approx 40 MIM powder suppliers,20 MIM feed stock suppliers.According to statistics,the forming capacity of global MIM industry is more than 700 injection molding machines,500 sintering furnace and 300 mixing machine.Marko Maetzig analyzed the condition of Europe,there are 120 companies and 30 research agencies working on MIM,having 250 injection molding machine,the annual consumption of feed stock are 1100 tons.There are 38% of European MIM companies coming from traditional ceramic industry,27% coming from plastic injection molding,8% coming from traditional powder metallurgy and metal machining,5% coming from casting industry,the rest 14% are newly established.Now there are 20-30 MIM companies in Japan,MIM market is emerging a stable growing trend.Although there are slight declines in 2001 compared with 2000,but overall,the sales are showing firmly growing tendency.
MIM has experienced a rapid developing path,although MIM has caused more and more attentions,the industrial scale was still week compared with traditional processing technologies at present.There are still a lot of potentials.New MIM industry still need us to adopt industry standard,speed industrialization and improve the quality of practitioners and research equipment as well as enlarging customer groups.With constantly improvement in technology,the advantages of MIM technology are becoming more and more obvious,it will be accepted by more and more industries,that means the shares of marketing requirements are increasing and there is a huge potential market waiting for us to explore.Many of risky investors are starting to move into MIM industry,as we can see,MIM will become one of the most promising technology of producing precision components in 21st. Century.
